How likely are you to recommend Spartanburg Area Mental Health?
“I was transferred here after an involuntary psych ward stint earlier this year. I went in with the highest of hopes, when I met my doctor, I told her I felt my Prozac dose needed to be increased. She flatly refused and had me take a drug test. Months later they are asking me for $600. Lmao. Sorry not sorry. I found a legitimate psychiatrist and not only are your services not wanted anymore but I encourage anyone else to stay away. The reviews are correct.”
“My son was put on a polypharmacy of very high risk drugs for his mental illness by Dr Segars. He should have been monitored more closely in my opinion. He died at 45 years old. His cause of death was from natural causes -.side effects of his meds. He suffered a sudden cardiac death. I regret that I did not find a better psychiatrist for his needs. I have sit in on every psychiatric appointment he has had over his lifetime. It was never explained how deadly the meds were. My son died 3 months after his father died.”
“My experience goes like this. My days from Tuesday through Thursday have been brutal and they have been causing more trouble than helping at all. All what they have to do is encourage my parents to let me drive myself to appointments and that is all they have to do. Please do better.”
“My experience at this facility was extremely disappointing and emotionally draining. During my intake, the staff member who handled my admission was condescending and made me feel like I was a burden rather than a person seeking help. Over time, I was assigned multiple therapists, and every time I began to build trust with one, they were reassigned or left. This constant turnover made it impossible to make progress and felt like an emotional setback each time. I was treated by nurse practitioners for over a year and a half before I was finally told my diagnosis — not by my provider, but by another therapist. I never saw a psychiatrist the entire time I was there. Medications were prescribed that didn’t help, and when I said they made things worse, my concerns were brushed aside. I repeatedly voiced that I thought my diagnosis might be incorrect, or that other conditions like ADHD could be contributing to my symptoms. I was dismissed each time and told they “don’t treat that,” with no referrals or guidance for next steps. I later confirmed through my own research and records that I had been diagnosed with ADHD as a teenager, but no one at the facility seemed willing to even look into it. My second therapist — who was wonderful — was the only one who acknowledged that more than one diagnosis might be present, but she couldn’t act on it because she wasn’t a medical provider. My last therapist often dismissed my struggles with memory and motivation, telling me to “try harder” when I explained that standard strategies like planners don’t work if you forget about them entirely. That response was discouraging and unhelpful. The second nurse practitioner I saw had a very no-nonsense attitude and often made me feel scolded or on edge, once warning me about being “committed” even though I had clearly said I had no thoughts of self-harm. After I posted a negative review once before that was taken down shortly after I posted it, either by the facility reporting it or Google, I was suddenly called and encouraged to return, which felt insincere after months of feeling unheard. Overall, I left this facility feeling dehumanized and unsupported. I was a working parent doing my best to manage life and seek help, but instead of compassion or genuine care, I felt dismissed and stigmatized. I truly hope this facility improves how it communicates, follows up, and treats patients with more understanding and respect.”
