What patients say on Google

“I am writing this review after having time away from RiverVista to reflect on my July 2026 psychiatric hospitalization and review some of the paperwork I kept from my stay. I went to RiverVista because I needed psychiatric care. I left believing even more strongly that psychiatric care and human dignity must exist in the same room. During my hospitalization, I filed a RiverVista Patient Complaint & Grievance Form. On that grievance, while I was still inside the facility, I wrote: “I FEAR RETALIATION.” That fact remains one of the most troubling parts of my experience. My grievance raised concerns involving restraint, patient rights, rules, and my request for fresh air. I also had concerns about the level of restriction I experienced and whether I fully understood the policies and patient rights governing what was happening to me. I want to be fair: I do not believe every person working at RiverVista was bad, nor am I claiming that every patient will have the experience I had. There were human beings working there, and where someone treated me with dignity or helped stabilize me, that matters too. But prospective psychiatric patients and their families need to understand something important: needing mental-health treatment does not erase a patient's humanity, credibility, voice, or rights. My strongest advice before admission is this: Ask for the patient-rights information. Read it. Know how to file a grievance. Ask who the patient advocate is. Ask what outside organization can receive a complaint. Keep your paperwork. If a restriction is imposed that you do not understand, ask what policy authorizes it and why it applies to you. Most importantly, do not assume that because someone is experiencing a psychiatric crisis, everything they say should automatically be dismissed as a symptom of mental illness. I am intentionally distinguishing between what I personally experienced, what my surviving documents establish, my personal interpretation of those experiences, and questions that remain unresolved. I will not exaggerate what happened to make RiverVista look worse, but I also will not erase what happened simply because I was a psychiatric patient when it happened. I wish I had understood before admission everything I understand about patient rights now. If my experience helps another patient or family know what questions to ask before walking through those doors, then something useful came from what I experienced. Psychiatric care should stabilize people without sacrificing their dignity. --- tina Mathews🤎”

“I cannot speak on the inpatient because I was only in outpatient. That being said, I thought the outpatient staff was wonderful! Very caring, patient, and helpful. Kameron, the counselor leading group therapy did a great job at touching on different skills and coping mechanisms that are useful for dealing with all mental illnesses. Amelia, the outpatient nurse is fantastic. Tina and Dee, the outpatient director and coordinator respectfully are incredibly good at their jobs. The entire team is always willing to listen and help in any way they can. Overall, it’s a great group of people, and if you use the resources they give you i think it can be very helpful. My complaints: the food is horrible, I mean just inedible. Also, they don’t have a psychiatrist in-building, you meet with him over zoom. Not the biggest deal, but if you're interested in more extensive diagnostic testing this probably isn't the best place. I think the group can be a little bit broad in terms of the skills you’re taught. If you’ve been through DBT or CBT before some of it will be redundant to you.”

“I spent about 20 days inpatient here and am close to completing the full program. I’ve been in mental health treatment since I was a child, and while this place did help me grow, that’s mainly because of the staff — not leadership. Inpatient: The nurses and floor staff are patient, supportive, and genuinely care. They deserve far more recognition. However, the environment often felt overly restrictive, and I witnessed situations where policies worsened crises instead of helping. Leadership, especially the director, felt disconnected and dismissive, treating patients more like numbers than people. Inpatient rating: 6.5/10 Outpatient (PHP & IOP): This is where RiverVista truly shines. Tasir, Diane, Janae, and Ashley are exceptional. They treat patients like humans, challenge us, and don’t give up. PHP and IOP helped me process trauma and regain hope in ways past treatment never did. Unfortunately, interactions with the director were unprofessional. Concerns about schedule changes and patient lives outside treatment were dismissed, creating an uncomfortable and defensive environment. PHP: 9.5/10 | IOP: 9.7/10 Overall, amazing therapists and staff held back by poor leadership. I’m grateful for the care I received, but this place could be much better with stronger, more compassionate leadership”

“If only you could give a facility 0 stars. As a nurse and a patient I can say with 100% confidence that thiis place is a joke. Being there a week I experienced only 3 professional caregivers, Angel, Mavis and Aimee. And I am not sure how long you will keep them the way I saw them treated by patients and co workers alike. The food is horrible. The art and music therapy is cute but te actual counseling or physiological care is NON-EXISTENT and unapologetically so. Providers told me that I am basically there to be held, not helped, as if it is a drunk talk or a kennel. The CNP made multiple mistakes with my medication, including sending it to the wrong pharmacy and not communicating with my home clinic to verify my dosage upon discharge. I didn't even get all of my belongings I am sure the only way people end up there is not by choice and they are no better once they leave. If you care about yourself or anyone else who needs mental health care DO NOT SEND THEM HERE!! Not if you give a damn about their well-being in any way. Don't walk away from this place....RUN!”
