“Dear Dr. Shishuka Malhotra: I'm being generous by giving this organization 2 stars... only because they seem like really nice and caring staff. But be forwarned: This company is NOT here to serve people in recovery. They are here to serve Big Pharma! The whole experience was degrading, overall. I wasn't even provided drinking water. They picked me up late for a 9:30 AM appointment. But I didn't start until after 10. By the time I was done at 11 (no, the assessment did not take a half hour as stated, or I would have been out the door by 10AM, and back home before 11AM to eat lunch and get ready for my next critical appointment that afternoon)... sadly the one driver they had hired, some quirky old dude with groceries in his back seat... was nowhere to be found by almost 11:30. So I had essentially wasted 3 hours of my morning already for a late "half hour assessment", at least an hour of which consisted of waiting for the next step to happen without any communication whatsoever from the staff, and an hour for the actual assessment. So next time tell me: 2 hour assessment in addition to the 2 hours waiting and being transported without any notification as to when your ride is coming back. Not "half hour assessment". Very misleading for a working person, especially someone who is not financially well off and experiences other medical difficulties. So, yeah, friendly... but clearly no form of upper management was overseeing my experience. There was zero regard for my needs as an individual. I felt like some random pawn being shuffled around a dusty clinic while I waited for a mysterious doctor to clarify when and how I would be proceeding! Suffice it to say: transparency is not something that you will be extended the courtesy of should you unwisely decide to do one of their "clinical trials". Now don't get me wrong, if you're reeeally desperate and like need a week of free inpatient... yeah go do their study instead of committing suicide. Fortunately I'm not as desperate as some folks, and don't believe addiction to medical cannabis would have warranted the extreme measures they were suggesting. In summary I would have been getting around $3000 for being required to take an experimental drug while going to inpatient rehab for a week, with subsequent testing and checkups for 30 days afterwards. Not bad for a months work in theory. And in theory it was supposed to help me stop smoking. In reality: this organization took huge liberties with both my time and personal dignity before we got anywhere near that point. So the baseline is I'd rather keep my dignity. And you can keep your dirty money! My question is: why did you think a self-respecting person would allow you to lead them around on a leash (taking liberties with their life and livelihood in the process) without any form of communication as to when and where the next steps would take place? Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but the extended waiting around like some doofie kid on a disorganized middle-school field trip was enough for me. I get the feeling your doctor Shakshuka here is sort of a funnel for the big pharmaceutical industry!!! Truth. Conclusion: I ultimately was forced to walk 2 miles to the nearby airport and call a cab to get back to Akron on time! Luckily I made my other appointment. I still haven't received any written correspondence back from them as to what actually occurred. I don't expect I will! My advice: don't waste your time time and self-respect. Go get a job and a therapist and hit up a few meetings! It will be a better investment of your energy and resources most likely. This company is NOT here to serve people in recovery. They are here to serve Big Pharma!”

“Edit: I'm changing my 3 star review to a 4 star review. The folks at NBCR (hi Shilpa!) were kind enough to reach out and offered me a tour of their new, finished facility. It's much nicer than the previous accomodations and a lot of thought has clearly gone into it. It's a place I could imagine staying for a month or two, to do a study. I might try that this summer, we'll see. It would be on par with the nicest facility I've spent time in. I also plan to do start doing annual memory tests through their associated nonprofit, Ohio Center for Hope. They may have some organizational issues, and I gather there is often confusion about when you are compensated. They're trying to address it. Everyone I've ever met here has been very nice, I think as an organization, and on an individual basis, they mean well and are trying to do Good. So I'm giving them a 4 star review. My heart wants to give them a 2 star review, but I think I'm too salty and annoyed (having just driven 2.5 hours round trip and having spent 3 hours in their waiting room being largely ignored) to be objective. I am satisfied it's a legitimate operation, but they seem very disorganized and don't inspire much confidence. A few weeks ago I was told there was a study for me the next week. Then I didn't hear from them for a few weeks. Then there's another study, different med, 39 day stay. That's really all the information they gave me before I packed a bag and went down there. They're real nonchalant about spending a few weeks somewhere while on an experimental medicine. The information I did receive over the phone wasn't actually correct. It was a longer study than they told me to prepare for. I didn't find that out until I'd been sitting around the waiting room for a couple hours. I went on a brief tour of the living quarters, it is not adequate, in my opinion. The rooms are very small and it's 2 to a room, the beds looked kinda grungey, you're expected to wash your bed linens once a week in their laundry, which is located in a dirty closet that had construction going on. 12 people share 1 bathroom and 1 shower. Everything was very cramped and cluttered and kinda dingy, the common area was small and messy when we were there. Most people were going in and out, smoking it seemed. There was still construction going on. It's a fairly new building, I don't understand why they didn't do a better job if they were planning to house 12 people, all of whom are sick. Every psych ward I've ever been to has been considerably nicer than this place. I have schizophrenia and a couple anxiety disorders, had I tried to stay in their shabby, cramped accomodations with 11 strangers and 1 bathroom on a new med, it would absolutely have made things worse. It would have set me back, for sure. The money was appealing and I'm disappointed this place isn't any better than it is, but I wasn't satisfied that they'd provide adequate care. I decided it wasn't worth it and left after 3 hours without actually having a meeting with anyone. We weren't the only ones, there was another couple who sat around for a couple hours waiting too, it was their fourth visit and they said it's always like that. "If you have an appointment, expect to spend the entire day here," is what they said. Others sat for a half hour or more waiting. This is after my appointment was pushed back twice the day before I was supposed to go there. At my first appointment (at the offices) I waited a half hour too. I can't believe they expect people to stay there for weeks and take experimental meds when they come off as disorganized and unprofessional as they do. My partner was equally annoyed and disappointed by what she saw. She felt they were disrespectful to the patients, letting them just sit around waiting like that. So yeah, NBCR doesn't inspire much confidence and I wouldn't recommend it.”
