There were multiple interactions that left me feeling belittled and diminished as a patient. What was especially troubling was that comments regarding education, accomplishments, and cultural background created the impression that I was being compared to the provider rather than being helped. As a Black American woman, I felt that my experiences and perspective were not respected, and I left sessions feeling worse about myself instead of feeling heard and supported. Therapy should be a space where clients feel safe discussing their mental health without feeling judged or made to feel inferior. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. For that reason, I chose to seek care elsewhere.”
