What patients say on Google

“My child was admitted to Hyland and they lost some of his belongings and it happens to be his valuables, and the belongings list wasn’t even accurate (how convenient). It was a gold necklace he received from his grandmother. When he mentioned he had a gold necklace they came back with someone else’s stuff. I would think they would have security lock the valuables up but they just left the belongings bag for anyone to access. My child also mentioned that the Dr didn’t even come to see him the first couple of days of admission and only talked to him through virtual meetings. The only staff I felt that cared was the Dr. who did my child’s discharge.”

“Hyland Mental Health Hospital put me through trauma I never thought I would recover from. From the moment I was there, I felt unsafe and powerless staff walked around openly with needles meant to put patients to sleep and even attempted to give me a sedative without my consent. Rules were enforced selectively, like allowing the one person who wasn’t permitted phone calls to freely call numbers off the TV, while chaos was ignored all around. The girls were allowed to fight and bad-mouth each other, and I could hear staff talking about patients behind our backs, stripping away any sense of dignity or trust. I had met a patient in there that had diabetes and they forgot to give him his meds and he had went into diabetic shock, they rushed him to the ER and said that he almost did not make it. He stayed in the ER for 2 days and when he came back I had to stay on top of him taking his meds and they always told him that they need a minute. What terrified me most was being told that male patients standing outside my door while I slept was something they “couldn’t do anything about” because there were cameras and they would just “watch for anything to happen.” I was so afraid that I slept under my covers for the first two days just to feel some sense of protection, and even after I was released, those habits followed me home. What happened there left deep scars fear, hyper vigilance , and trauma I still carry because no place meant to help should ever make someone feel that unsafe or unheard. Please if you love your family do not send them here! I beg you to try other options because I am still crying and panicking about this place and I haven’t been there since august of last year. Side note even my therapist when I got out told me I should have never been sent there and he helped me work through my trauma from that place.”

“You know what, I will write my experience with this facility back in June 2024 because my as of today my EX psychiatrist suggested a Mercy facility during my last appt with her. Bare with me, it is a rough ride but important for others considering this toilet of a facility... IMPORTANT RED FLAG!!: in a 5 day stay, I had NEVER SEEN THE SAME DOCTOR TWICE. The "chats" with the doctors were never past 5 minutes and you DO NOT see the doctors daily like you really should. Keep this in mind as you read this! June 2024: I called for 911 services on myself to reach out for help to end up at Hyland. Beforehand, I was told I can sign voluntarily or be forced to go (I hesitated to even go voluntarily when they explained paperwork, but they said it was too late and I would be forced to go even if I didn't willingly sign). I did sign, as I had reached out to 911. I get to Hyland and the very first thing I see is a guy being strapped/restrained to a chair while screaming (a patient who will go around making threats about women, crapped pants in visitor area, and nearly stripped pants in the visitor area as well, all of which nurses nor doctors NEVER addressed). During my 5-day stay, this guy would scream, A LOT to the point when I would call family, they could hear him even though he was all the way in a different area. Nurses did NOTHING to stop him from screaming at the top of his lungs or him making threats. Anyways, each and every day for 5 days (my stay length), the nurses tried to force whatever supposed depression medications on me AND a nicotine patch (I am not a smoker, never have been my entire life and I informed them of this but they kept insisting smoking was on my record). I denied each attempt the nurses tried to give me medications and rightfully so. Three phones were in the facility for open use (certain times limited), but it was down to one phone for almost 2 days straight. The staff ignored a patient who was prodding the phone line with a pen, attempting to ruin it, to which I pointed out to a nurse asking "what is she doing?" and the nurse replied "I don't know" and ignored it. After I get more [un]settled 3 days in, I was asked for a blood sample by nurses. Never happened because they forgot but most likely because they did NOT care at all (Then, right before I was supposed to leave, did they ask for a blood sample again, to which I rightfully said "NO, you had your chance when I first got here". The male nurse responds to me with "well, I haven't met you yet" (this same nurse also 'forgets' to return my cane when I leave later that same day, as I had invasive surgeries less than a year prior. Though they did provide me with a walker during my stay in case, which is the only 1 thing done correct). No one is protected here. If you think men and women are separated, you are dead wrong. Anyone can walk into anyone's (shared) rooms, despite your roomate being of the same sex. Nurses are supposed to check rooms every 15 minutes, especially at night. Those room checks didn't happen during daytime as strictly scheduled. There was an elderly lady who asked for a shower and her clothes to be washed for after the shower, which she got neither. She also was ignored despited needing/requiring a 24/7 nurse at her side, that she tried to stand and walk, with her assigned nurse at the time not even giving a crap because she was on her phone merely telling the elderly lady to "sit down, don't try to stand/walk" but actively doing nothing else to prevent it from happening. I heard the elderly lady try to explain to her visiting family about the bad treatment by staff and I felt so horrible because I truly don't think her family believed her at all. Another patient (elderly female) had twice, TWICE, kept approaching personal interactions/information with me and the psychiatrist as well as front desk nurses. This patient had touched my arm without my permission and I nearly wanted to punch her for doing so. The staff did NOTHING either time except to tell her to go away/somewhere else. Can't fit more, limit reached 🙄”

“I was sent here in 2019 because I was in a depression crisis and I hate to be blunt but being here felt like a prison sentence. The only outside time we got was in a gym, we couldn't even go outside and enjoy the sun and fresh air. You can't smoke cigarettes or anything you are always in your ward I'm sorry to be blunt but at least prisoners get rec time outside I felt like a caged animal. 0 oit of 10 experience!!! Next time if i need help I will either just talk to my mom or buy an emotional support dog instead of wasting money to go to places like this. Worst experience ever!!!!!”
